Personal Development
Personal Development at Wheatfield
At Wheatfield, personal development is at the heart of everything we do. Guided by our vision — “Together, we create a nurturing and inclusive community where every individual is supported to learn, achieve and succeed” — we are committed to developing confident, respectful and well-rounded individuals who are fully prepared for life beyond school.
We believe education is about more than academic success. It is about enabling every child to discover and develop their unique talents and abilities, while learning to build positive relationships, make responsible choices and show care for the world around them. Through a culture of collaboration, high expectations and a shared love of learning, pupils are empowered to thrive both personally and socially.
Rooted in the GLF Schools commitment to excellence, our approach to personal development reflects our dedication to:
- Raising aspirations and achievement for all pupils
- Providing inspiring learning experiences led by passionate professionals
- Promoting challenge, enjoyment and a lifelong passion for learning
- Delivering a curriculum tailored to meet the needs of our community
- Encouraging pupils to lead healthy, active and responsible lives
Our core values of respect, kindness, courage and trying your best underpin all aspects of school life. These values are explicitly taught, consistently modelled and widely celebrated, ensuring that pupils develop a strong moral compass and a clear understanding of how to contribute positively to society.
Through a wide range of opportunities—including leadership roles, enrichment activities, pupil voice and community engagement—pupils develop confidence, resilience and independence. They learn to respect diversity, appreciate different perspectives and take pride in their own achievements as well as those of others.
At Wheatfield, we are proud to nurture not only successful learners, but also thoughtful, responsible and aspirational individuals, equipped with the knowledge, skills and character to make a positive difference in the world.
Sport and School Games
Sport plays a key role in our personal development offer and supports pupils’ physical health, wellbeing and character development. We are proud to work closely with the Wokingham School Games, providing pupils with a wide range of opportunities to engage in both competitive and inclusive sporting experiences.
Through this partnership, children are encouraged to try new sports, develop new skills and take part in a variety of events that broaden their experiences beyond the curriculum. Pupils have the opportunity to represent Wheatfield in inter-school competitions, fostering a sense of pride, teamwork and belonging.
Participation in these events also enables children to meet pupils from other schools, develop confidence in social situations and gain a deeper understanding of important values such as fairness, respect and resilience. Our inclusive approach ensures that all pupils—regardless of ability—are supported to enjoy being active, challenge themselves and experience success.
Our House System: Growing Leaders of Tomorrow
At Wheatfield, the House system lies at the heart of our community, fostering a strong sense of belonging, teamwork and pride. Every pupil is a valued member of one of our four Houses: St Andrew’s, St George’s, St Patrick’s and St David’s. Through this structure, children build meaningful relationships across year groups, develop leadership skills and understand the importance of collaboration and healthy competition.
Our House system plays a vital role in supporting pupils’ personal development. Throughout the year, pupils take part in a wide range of events, from sporting competitions to creative and community-focused challenges. These opportunities promote resilience, teamwork, aspiration and respect—key qualities that prepare pupils for the next stage of their education.
A highlight of our House system is the leadership opportunity offered in Year 6. Pupils are invited to step forward as role models by applying to become House Captains. As part of this process, they write and deliver a speech to their peers, developing confidence, communication skills and the ability to inspire others. This democratic process ensures pupils have a voice and meaningful experience of leadership.
Once appointed, House Captains take on an important responsibility. They lead their teams throughout the year, supporting and encouraging younger pupils, organising participation in events and setting a brilliant example through their behaviour, effort and attitude. In doing so, they embody the values of our school and contribute positively to our inclusive, supportive culture.
Through our House system, every child is empowered to contribute, achieve and grow—both as an individual and as part of a team.
