Modern Foreign Languages

At Wheatfield Primary School, we are passionate about languages and recognise the many opportunities that learning another language can provide. We believe that language learning broadens horizons, builds confidence and communication skills, and helps children develop an understanding of different cultures and perspectives. Through our language curriculum, we aim to inspire a lifelong interest in learning languages and exploring the wider world.

Intent

Our aim is for all pupils to develop a genuine enthusiasm and curiosity for learning languages, with Spanish as our chosen language of study. Learning a second language enables children to communicate in new ways, deepens their understanding of other cultures, and helps them appreciate the diversity of the world around them.

We want pupils to develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing in another language, while also building resilience, independence and a willingness to take risks when communicating. By the time pupils leave Wheatfield, they will have a strong foundation for further language learning and feel inspired to continue their linguistic journey beyond Key Stage 2.

Implementation

At Wheatfield, languages are taught through engaging, progressive lessons that build pupils’ knowledge and skills over time. In line with the National Curriculum, our language curriculum develops children's curiosity about the world, enabling them to understand and respond to others in both spoken and written language.

As part of our transition to Spanish as our primary modern foreign language, pupils in Reception to Year 3 currently learn Spanish, while pupils in Years 4 to 6 continue to learn French. This phased approach ensures continuity and progression for all learners and will continue over the coming years until Spanish is taught throughout the school.

Languages are taught weekly. In the early years and Key Stage 1, children are introduced to language through songs, stories, rhymes and games that build confidence and enjoyment. From Key Stage 2 onwards, pupils follow a carefully sequenced curriculum that develops the four key language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, alongside pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary.

Impact

Through our language curriculum, pupils develop the confidence and skills to communicate in another language with increasing fluency and accuracy. They gain a secure understanding of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, while also developing an appreciation of different cultures and traditions.

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are equipped with the knowledge, confidence and enthusiasm needed to continue their language learning at secondary school and beyond, laying the foundations for becoming successful lifelong language learners.
